This is an illustration of a meeting of the retailers of Tbilisi. We see the depiction of the “Devil” on the foreground of the composition - symbolizing the story’s narrator's active role.
During the meeting the “Devil” had a speech. He wished the retailers success and invoked them to work hard, all day and night. However, the retailers did not like a speech about hard working. One of them had a long speech as an answer. He said that working was not their business and the workmen had to work hard, instead.
When the retailer finished his speech others applauded him happily. However the “Devil” took his whip, kicked the members and thus, spoiled their happiness.
